1. What Is Reality?
When we talk about reality, we usually mean the external world, the facts, events, and situations that exist independently of us. This is the objective reality that everyone can observe and agree on.
2. What Is Mental Reality?
Mental reality refers to our inner world: our thoughts, emotions, memories, perceptions, and interpretations of the external world. It’s a deeply personal and subjective experience that shapes how we feel and react.
3. Same Situation, Different Experiences
For example, two people might face the same situation, but their mental realities can be completely different. One might see a challenge as an exciting opportunity, while the other feels overwhelmed and anxious.
4. How Our Brain Shapes Mental Reality
Our mental reality is influenced by many factors: past experiences, culture, personality, and mood. Neuroscience shows the brain actively constructs our perception rather than just recording it. So, what we think we see or feel can differ from what’s actually “out there.”
5. Mental Reality and Mental Health
Mental health conditions like anxiety or depression often involve distortions in mental reality, where internal experiences don’t fully match external facts, leading to strong emotional responses.
6. Why It Matters
By understanding the difference between reality and mental reality, we can learn to question our automatic thoughts and emotions, reshaping our inner world for a healthier, balanced life.
