Sexual Orientation OCD (SO-OCD)

SO-OCD is a lesser-known but very real form of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

It involves persistent, intrusive thoughts about one’s sexual orientation.

Not out of curiosity or identity exploration, but because these thoughts trigger intense anxiety, doubt, and distress.

For example: Someone who identifies as straight might suddenly think:

“What if I’m gay?”

Someone who’s gay might obsessively fear:

“What if I’m actually straight?”

These thoughts are not affirming, they feel disturbing, ego-dystonic, and out of alignment with the person’s true self.

The OCD cycle often looks like:

→ Intrusive thoughts→ Mental reviewing, checking, avoiding triggers→ Seeking reassurance or testing reactions→ Short-term relief → more doubt → repeat

⚠️ This isn’t internalized homophobia or a suppressed truth. It’s OCD demanding absolute certainty in a world where identity is naturally fluid and personal.

If someone says, “I’m scared I might be gay/straight/etc.” and that fear causes distress (not curiosity) it could be OCD, not a shift in orientation.

It’s not about being LGBTQIA+. It’s about OCD’s need for control.

🌈 Being part of the LGBTQIA+ community is beautiful but SO-OCD is not about that.

It’s about an anxiety disorder hijacking one's peace of mind.

Let’s reduce stigma, promote understanding, and recognize OCD in all its forms.
