How Does Science Explain Consciousness?

Consciousness is one of the greatest unsolved mysteries in science. Despite decades of research, we still do not fully understand how the brain gives rise to subjective experience. Neuroscience has taught us a great deal about how the brain processes information, but explaining why we have an inner experience of the world remains a challenge.


What Is Consciousness?


In simple terms, consciousness refers to our awareness of ourselves and our surroundings. It includes our thoughts, emotions, sensations, memories, and the feeling of being an experiencing individual.

For example, when you see the colour red, your brain processes light at a specific wavelength. But beyond that physical process is the experience of what it feels like to see red. This subjective experience is at the heart of consciousness.


The Hard Problem of Consciousness


One of the most influential ideas in this field comes from philosopher David Chalmers, who introduced the concept of the "hard problem of consciousness."

Science can explain how the brain recognises faces, stores memories, or makes decisions. These are often called the "easy problems" because they involve identifying the neural mechanisms behind behaviour.


The difficult question is different.


Why do these brain processes produce conscious experience at all?

Why does brain activity feel like something from the inside, rather than simply occurring without awareness?


This question remains unanswered.


What Does Neuroscience Tell Us?


Although we do not yet know exactly how consciousness emerges, researchers have identified several brain regions that appear to play an important role.

The cerebral cortex, particularly the frontal and parietal lobes, is involved in attention, decision-making, and conscious awareness. Another key structure is the thalamus, which acts as a communication hub, allowing different areas of the brain to exchange information.

When these networks are severely disrupted, consciousness can be altered or lost, as seen in conditions such as coma or the vegetative state.


Major Scientific Theories


Global Workspace Theory


According to the Global Workspace Theory, information becomes conscious when it is broadcast across multiple brain networks rather than remaining confined to a single region.

In other words, consciousness may arise when information becomes globally available for different cognitive systems to use.


Integrated Information Theory


The Integrated Information Theory proposes that consciousness depends on how integrated and interconnected information is within a system.

According to this view, the more unified and interconnected the information processing, the richer the conscious experience.

While highly influential, this theory remains controversial because many of its predictions are difficult to test experimentally.


Can We Measure Consciousness?


Scientists can estimate levels of consciousness using tools such as electroencephalography (EEG), functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), and other neuroimaging techniques.

These methods help researchers study patients with disorders of consciousness and investigate how brain activity changes during sleep, anaesthesia, or coma.

However, none of these techniques can directly measure subjective experience itself.


Do We Have the Answer?


Not yet.


Modern neuroscience has made remarkable progress in understanding how the brain functions, but explaining why brain activity gives rise to conscious experience remains one of science's greatest challenges.


Many researchers believe that solving this mystery will require combining neuroscience, psychology, computer science, philosophy, and mathematics.

Consciousness reminds us that understanding the brain and understanding the mind are not necessarily the same thing.


We know that billions of neurons communicate through electrical and chemical signals. What we still do not know is how these interactions produce the rich, subjective experience of being aware.

For now, consciousness remains one of the most fascinating questions in science, and one that continues to inspire research across multiple disciplines.
